Winston Giles
Trail-born Winston Giles had a remarkable year in 1990. A 16-year-old student at Rossland Secondary School, Winston’s supremacy in track and field saw him sweep several Kootenay track meets effortlessly, winning gold at three straight meets, including the BC High School Championships.
A member of the Trail Track & Field Club under the coaching of the beloved Willi Krause, his wins earned him a spot at the Jack Brown Memorial Meet that July in Kelowna, securing bronze medals in hammer throw, discus, and shot put.
He completed at the Western Canadian Juvenile Championships that summer where he not only won a silver medal, but also the opportunity to compete for the BC Juvenile Track & Field team at the Nationals in Newfoundland.
And he didn’t disappoint. Winston earned a gold medal for top juvenile hammer thrower in the country, throwing 48 metres.
As a result of his stellar season, the Trail Track & Field club nominated him for the BC Juvenile Athlete of the Year award. Among hundreds of nominees from clubs across the province, Winston was named to the top three of BC’s juvenile athletes.
He carried on his passion for track and in 2013, set the master M35 hammer record for BC!
Winston was inducted in 2025.
